Wilson, L.E. 2008. Comparative taphonomy and paleoecological reconstruction of two microvertebrate accumulations from the Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation (Maastrichtian), eastern Montana. Palaios 23(5):289-297. doi: 10.2110/palo.2007.p07-006r.

ABSTRACT: Although microvertebrate accumulations are commonly used for paleoecological reconstructions, taphonomic processes affecting the final taxonomic composition of an accumulation are often ignored. This research explores the effects of abiotic taphonomic processes on the taxonomic composition of terrestrial microvertebrate accumulations by comparing a floodplain and a channel lag deposit from the Maastrichtian Hell Creek Formation in eastern Montana. Distribution of skeletal elements with specific physical attributes and relative abundance of taxa correlate with the hydraulic indicators (i.e., grain size, sedimentary structures) of the depositional facies. Transport distances, hydraulic equivalencies of dominant skeletal elements, amount of hydraulic sorting and reworking, and degree of time averaging vary between deposits and significantly affect taxonomic distributions. Relative abundance data, in conjunction with chi-square test results and rank-order analysis, show that size, shape, abrasion, and taxonomic compositions vary significantly between assemblages. The fine-grained assemblage is dominated by tabular, low-density elements, such as cycloid scales and fish vertebrae. Dense, equidimensional elements, such as teeth and ganoid fish scales, dominate the sandstone assemblage. Rank-order analysis results demonstrate that relative abundance of hydraulically equivalent skeletal elements from morphologically similar organisms can be compared regardless of accumulation in nonisotaphonomic deposits. Statistical comparisons were made among osteichthyans using ganoid scales, caudates using vertebrae, ornithischians using teeth, and testudinates using shell fragments. Results show that portions of the assemblage analyzed using hydrodynamically equivalent elements are not significantly different, despite different depositional environments.

Fiorillo, A.R. 2008. On the occurrence of exceptionally large teeth of Troodon (Dinosauria: Saurischia) from the Late Cretaceous of northern Alaska. Palaios 23(5):322-328. doi: 10.2110/palo.2007.p07-036r.

ABSTRACT: Exceptionally large teeth attributable to the theropod genus
Troodon are abundant in Upper Cretaceous rocks (Campanian Maastrichtian) of northern Alaska. The dominance of low-angle light in this Cretaceous high-latitude environment seems to have selected for an abundance of Troodon. The population of these Alaskan specimens— morphologically the same as teeth attributable to this taxon in other regions—show a mean approximately twice the size of those found in such southern latitudes as southern Alberta and Montana. Microwear patterns on the teeth of this taxon in Alaska and Montana suggest that these animals were eating similar food items. There appears to be good correlation between tooth size and body size in theropods, thereby allowing the inference that the increase in the size of Alaskan Troodon teeth equates to an increase in body size. The increased body size for Alaskan Troodon is likely related to increased availability of food resources as a result of decreased numbers of other predatory dinosaurs, particularly tyrannosaurids, in the ecosystem.

Lindgren, J., Currie, P.J., Rees, J., Siverson, M., LindstrĂśm, S., and Alwmark, C. 2008. Theropod dinosaur teeth from the lowermost Cretaceous Rabekke Formation on Bornhom, Denmark. Geobios 41(2):253-262. doi: 10.1016/j.geobios.2007.05.001.

ABSTRACT: The dinosaur fauna of the palynologically dated lower Berriasian Skyttegård Member of the Rabekke Formation on the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark, is represented by isolated tooth crowns. The assemblage is restricted to small maniraptoran theropods, assigned to the Dromaeosauridae incertae sedis and Maniraptora incertae sedis. The dromaeosaurid teeth are characterized by their labiolingually compressed and distally curved crowns that are each equipped with a lingually flexed mesial carina and a distinctly denticulated distal cutting edge. A morphologically aberrant tooth crown (referred to as Maniraptora incertae sedis) has triangular denticles of uneven width, a feature occasionally found in Upper Cretaceous hesperornithiform toothed diving birds, but also in premaxillary teeth of the velociraptorine Nuthetes from the Lower Cretaceous of England.

Lovelace, D.M., Hartman, S.A. & Wahl, W.R. 2007. Morphology of a specimen of Supersaurus (Dinosauria, Sauropoda) from the Morrison Formation of Wyoming, and a re-evaluation of diplodocid phylogeny. Arquivos do Museu Nacional, Rio do Janeiro, 65(4): 527-544.

ABSTRACT: A new specimen of Supersaurus vivianae is described, providing additional information about the osteology of Supersaurus. The single Supersaurus individual that the WDC quarry produced allows a reexamination of elements referred to Supersaurus from the Dry Mesa quarry. The osteology supports maintaining the generic distinction of Supersaurus. Phylogenetic evaluation finds a monophyletic Apatosaurinae containing [Apatosaurus + Supersaurus] + Suuwassea, and a monophyletic Diplodocinae containing [Diplodocus + Seismosaurus] + Barosaurus, although the generic distinction of Seismosaurus is not supported in the current analysis.

New information on Megaraptor

ABSTRACT: Megaraptor is a giant theropod included as a possible Coelurosauria. Its big claw was originally assigned to the digit II of the pes. In the last year, the discovery of complete manus bones of a Megaraptor allowed the knowledge of new morphological characters and, therefore, new interpretations on phylogenetic relationships. As a result, Megaraptor was proposed to be a basal tetanuran sharing characteristics with charcarodontosaurids and spinosaurids. In general, manus of basal tetanurans are quite unknown as they commonly lack phalanges, carpals or even the complete manus, being the information on them limited. So that, the hand elements of Megaraptor here studied represents an important material not only for furnishing new morphological data but also for the understanding of its behavior.

Tłumaczenie abstraktu (trochę dodałem od siebie)
Właśnie został opisany nowy osobnik z gatunku Supersaurus vivianae, który dostarczył dodatkowych informacji o budowie kostnej superzaura. Pojedynczy osobnik wydobyty z kamieniołomu WDC (Wyoming Dinosaur Center) pozwolił na ponowne zbadanie elementów przypisanych do rodzaju Supersaurus z kamieniołomu Dry Mesa. Budowa kości utrzymuje osobność rodzaju Supersaurus. Badania filogenetyczne wskazują monofiletyczny klad Apatosaurinae, w którym Supersaurus to siostrzany takson Apatosaurus, z nieco dalej spokrewnionym rodzajem Suuwassea (dotychczas uważanym jedynie za przedstawiciela kladu Flagellicaudata, obejmującego Dicraeosauridae i Diplodocidae).

Streszczenie: Megaraptor to olbrzymi teropod należący prawdopodobnie do celurozaurów. W 2006 roku, odkrycie kompletnych kości kończyny przedniej Megaraptor, pozwoliło poznać nowe cechy morfologiczne, a zatem i nowe interpretacje jego relacji filogenetycznych.

Systematics and phylogeny of Stegosauria

Maidment, S.C.R., Norman, D.B., Barrett, P.M., and Upchurch, P. 2008. Systematics and phylogeny of Stegosauria (Dinosauria: Ornithischia). Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. doi:10.1017/S1477201908002459

Stegosauria is a clade of ornithischian dinosaurs characterised by a bizarre array of dermal armour extending, in two parasagittal rows, from the cervical region to the end of the tail. Although Stegosaurus is one of the most familiar of all dinosaurs, little is known regarding the evolutionary history of this clade.

Alpha-level taxonomic revision of all proposed stegosaur taxa shows that 11 species of stegosaur can be regarded as valid on the basis of autapomorphies. These are: Dacentrurus armatus and Loricatosaurus priscus (gen. nov.) from Europe; Kentrosaurus aethiopicus and Paranthodon africanus from Africa; Tuojiangosaurus multispinus, Chungkingosaurus jiangbeiensis, Huayangosaurus taibaii, Gigantspinosaurus sichuanensis and Stegosaurus homheni (comb. nov.) from China; and Stegosaurus mjosi (comb. nov.) and Stegosaurus armatus from North America.

A cladistic analysis of Stegosauria (the first to be based upon direct observation of all relevant specimens) is presented, which indicates that Tuojiangosaurus, Loricatosaurus and Paranthodon are sister taxa to Stegosaurus. Stegosaurinae can be defined as all stegosaurs more closely related to Stegosaurus than to Dacentrurus; Stegosauridae is defined as all stegosaurs more closely related to Stegosaurus than to Huayangosaurus; and Huayangosauridae can be defined as all stegosaurs more closely related to Huayangosaurus than to Stegosaurus. This study is also the first phylogenetic analysis to include Gigantspinosaurus, which is recovered as the most basal stegosaur.

Tereschenko, V. S. 2008. Adaptive features of protoceratopoids (Ornithischia: Neoceratopsia). Paleontological Journal 42 (3): 50-64.
Abstract pisze:The analysis of some morphological characteristics of protoceratopoid skeletons, the extent of mobility of the vertebral column, and the probable adaptive significance of these features suggest that Bagaceratops had a mostly aquatic mode of life, Protoceratops was semiaquatic, Udanoceratops was facultatively aquatic, and Leptoceratops was predominantly terrestrial. Protoceratopoids were quadrupeds, with the prevalence of hind limbs, probably using slow or rapid trotlike gait. An asymmetrical locomotion was most likely impossible. On dry land, Bagaceratops and Protoceratops moved slowly. Udanoceratops and Leptoceratops approximately equally used rapid and slow locomotor modes, although the second could run for a longer time than the first.

Unfortunately with this paper is a glaring issue: The author refers to
transverse processes for each of the four studied "protoceratopoids" (by which is apparently meant, as used in an earlier paper, as the stem of Neoceratopsia and for the combination of Protoceratopsidae and Bagaceratopsidae, incorrectly spelled by Tereschenko and attributed thusly -- it is referred to Gregory and Brown, who coined Protoceratopsidae, and thus it should be "Protoceratopsoidea"), but argues they are minimal to weakly developed to virtually absent in the middle of the tail. These permit the tail a very high aspect ratio (h:w), which, when combined with the author's observed intervertebral articulations, allow the tail a high bilateral flexibility. Unfortunately, this is tied to an alligator and an amphibian, and is linked to a sculling function, thus providing the animals with a semi-aquatic behavior.

Pedal phalanges are also figured, with a scale between claw-like in
*Protoceratops* and *Bagaceratops* to more hoof-like in *Leptoceratops* and *Udanoceratops* (so that the latter two are less aquatic than the former two). This marks the first time the vertebrae and the pes of *Udanoceratops* have been figured to my knowledge in a press publication, although Tereschenko's disseration on the vertebrae of "proceratopsoids" must be a gold mine, as well as that of *Bagaceratops* (which has fantastically tall neural spines!).

Now, the linkage here that seems troubling to me is that the neural spine
architechture and the incipient flexibility of the tail (greatest proximally
due to heterocoelous caudal centra, graduating to more rigid platycoelous in
the more distal caudals) are given as aquatic adaptations. The absence of
developed transverse (or costal) processes appears of little note, despite
being well-developed in the caudal organs of most (if not actually all)
sculling animals, and this would have serious implications, as it anchors the
otherwise important sculling muscles of caudofemoral suite to the base of the tail, as in most other dinosaurs, few of whom have been proven to be any sort of aquatic organisms of note, except for some members of modern birds and a few of their ancestors like hesperornithiforms (in which, of course, such processes are present in nearly all free caudals).

The paper goes into some detail on the vertebral posture, giving some animals a gradual dorsal arch and a relatively flexible neck and others with an inflexible neck and highly arched dorsum (e.g., *Bagaceratops*); the flattest dorsal arch is found in *Leptoceratops*, and *Udanoceratops* had one of the more flexible necks of studied animals. Problematically, an arched dorsum is present in animals in which the forward half of the trunk is inflexible, where the forelimbs and shoulder girdle are required for the purpose of locomotion focused in the fore-aft plane. This is at odds with the argument of a sculling function in the tail, and in fact merely underscores the true absence of an aquatic habitus in any of these detailed "protoceratopsoids".

So in all, the paper argues without providing what I think of as prodigious
evidence of an aquatic lifestyle for some of the Mongolian ceratopsians,
arguing instead that the animals, however somewhat flexible in the tail they
may be, were not that very aquatic, but may have had some ability to swing.
This can be argued of a good deal of other dinosaurs, as well.
